Sheep Placenta: A Potent Anti-aging Supplement

Sheep placenta supplements are supplements derived from sheep placenta that usually come in capsule form. The placenta is an organ that delivers nutrients to the fetus during a mammalian pregnancy. Sheep placenta is widely popular in Asia, Africa, and the West for its anti-aging properties. In 1923, Filatov V.P. discovered that sheep placenta is rich in nutrients that accelerate tissue regeneration [1]. Since then, this remarkable substance has been the subject of continued research.

Why is Sheep Placenta a Potent Anti-aging Ingredient?

As an organ that is in charge of supplementing the fetus with essential nutrients, the sheep placenta is rich in;

  • Growth Factors
  • Nucleic Acids
  • Amino Acids
  • Extracellular Matrix (ECM) Components
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals

Each nutrient benefits the body differently and may provide anti-aging properties based on its function.

Sheep Placenta Benefits for Your Skin

One of the earliest signs of aging you can see is on your skin appearance. Skin dryness, wrinkles, fine lines, and liver spots or sunspots are some of the easiest signs to see. Nutrients in the sheep placenta that may tackle these early signs of aging are;

Growth Factors

Growth factors are regulatory proteins that help signal the cells’ pathways. They are indispensable but can decline with age. There are four growth factors important for your skin; epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor. These growth factors are needed to stimulate your fibroblasts for collagen and elastin production [2].

Fibroblasts are the main active cells in your connective tissues. They are everywhere in your body, and how they function varies depending on where they are. Generally, fibroblasts are the cells that produce natural collagen, hyaluronic acid, and mucopolysaccharides.

When there is damaged tissue, fibroblasts will migrate to the damaged site whenever your tissues are damaged to release collagen to speed up wound healing [*]. Without damage, it will continue releasing collagen, hyaluronic acid, and mucopolysaccharides on various body parts as needed.

In the skin, fibroblasts are the main cells facilitating skin elasticity and healing. As you age, your body stops producing certain hormones, growth factors, and more nutrients that slow down the fibroblasts. When this happens, you will start showing more obvious signs of aging on your skin because you have less collagen, hyaluronic acid, and mucopolysaccharides.

Sheep placenta is a potent anti-aging ingredient because most of its nutrients focus on maintaining and improving your fibroblasts.

Nucleic Acids

Nucleic acids are chemical compounds that carry genetic information to your cells. Sheep placenta contains the two main classes of nucleic acids; deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) [3]. Nucleic acids provide the information your fibroblasts need for collagen and elastin production, as well as their synthesis.

This allows your skin to produce and replenish its own collagen for a youthful appearance.

Amino Acids

As a crucial fetal development organ, the placenta contains various amino acids – an important protein building block. Amino acids inside the sheep placenta that benefit the skin are [4]

  • Leucine – helps your body make proteins such as collagen and growth hormones and is a part of wound healing
  • Threonine – provides structure, connective tissue for collagen and elastin
  • Valine – helps with tissue regeneration, an important part of wound healing

Combined with nucleic acids, sheep placenta’s effectiveness on skin elasticity may double, up to reducing existing lines and wrinkles.

Burns, lacerations, and skin inflammations such as acne are some ways you can wound your skin. Your natural wound-healing capabilities decrease over time, and when your wounds are not healed properly, they will cause scars. Scars damage your skin texture and may make your skin appear older.

How well your skin heals is directly related to how youthful your skin and body are. Sheep placenta can be a valuable source of specific nutrients that may help boost your body's natural healing process for healthy, youthful skin.

Extracellular Matrix (ECM) Components

ECM is present in all tissues and organs and is the largest component of your skin layers. Collagen and elastin are a major part of this. Collagen and elastin are the main proteins that give your skin elasticity and firmness. Most beauty supplements in the market will include collagen sourced from bovine, marine, or vegan sources.

The sheep placenta naturally contains these proteins alongside other ECMs that help form the skin’s biological network and structural integrity for a young, healthy appearance.

Vitamins

Vitamin B complexes are one of the most essential vitamins your body needs. The sheep placenta has many vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12. B vitamins that help improve the benefits of sheep placenta on your skin are;

  • Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) – helps form DNA and RNA
  • Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) – plays a vital role in DNA formation

These two B vitamins, in short, support your skin’s appearance more by improving the amount of DNA and RNA.

Minerals

Aside from vitamins, sheep placenta also contains minor traces of minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, sodium, and zinc. Out of these, magnesium and zinc are the minerals that might contribute to sheep placenta’s benefits for the skin.

Magnesium is a cofactor for several enzymes needed for DNA and glutathione synthesis. Glutathione is a natural antioxidant your body produces. It is made from the amino acids glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid. It helps with skin brightness and UV protection. Another helpful mineral present is zinc, which can help support wound healing.

Does Sheep Placenta Really Work for Anti-aging?

In a 2022 study done in China, it was found that sheep placenta does have anti-aging effects.

The study involves a laboratory experiment on SAMP8 mice – a breed commonly used to study cognitive aging and brain dementia. The experiment is conducted ethically on four groups of mice, with one constant. Group A acts as a control group, while groups B, C, and D are given placenta extracts at different doses to measure the degree of sheep placenta’s anti-aging effects based on a pre-set index.

After three months, the research shows positive effects of sheep placenta on anti-aging. Sheep placenta cannot completely stop the natural aging process, but it does slow the process significantly, and the most obvious markers are on the mice’s appearance. The signs indicating the mice’s appearance include skin glossiness and hair loss.

Based on these markers, the mice supplemented with sheep placenta have glossy skin and minimal hair loss, depending on the doses. The researchers concluded that this might be due to the nutrients in the sheep’s placenta [5]

Research on the anti-aging properties of sheep placenta is ongoing, especially considering the high bioavailability and the ingredient’s history of use.

Like other anti-aging supplements in the market, whether or not your sheep placenta supplement works depends on the following;

  • The dosage – whether you are taking optimal dosage or not
  • The intake compliance – how disciplined you are in taking them on time as instructed
  • The extraction ratio – how pure the ingredients are
  • The supplement formulation – how synergistic the formulation is

We have covered several articles on how dietary supplements work, how to get the most out of your anti-aging supplements, as well as why extraction ratio and supplement formulation matter if you need a deeper understanding.

Should You Start Taking Sheep Placenta Supplements?

Whether or not you start taking sheep placenta supplements depends on your goal. Sheep placenta supplement, like other dietary supplements in the market, is supposed to supplement your diet or anti-aging skincare routine for long-term effects. It should not be a form of alternative treatment or medication.

If you have a pre-existing condition, please consult your doctor or nutritionist before taking sheep placenta supplements daily.
